Two years ago, I decided to get behind the camera and share our farm with the world. A month later and a couple degrees of separation, we were asked by host Aubrey Aquino to be featured on her show, California Bountiful! (Thanks Kim and Raj!) A few more weeks went by and we then got asked by to be on KRON Live in the Bay!
So sitting in the chair here, we thought it would be fun to share my experience of working with these productions!
KIM: "What was it like having a film crew onsite at Turbow Farms?"
CHAR: "It was absolutely nerve wracking! There was this initial sense of everything needing to be perfect!! eg. PULL EVERY WEED. That feeling grew old pretty quickly after pulling weeds from one area of the property and realizing weeds had already popped up elsewhere. We were just going to have to settle on being perfectly imperfect!
KIM: "What was it like going on set to KRON Live in the Bay!?"
CHAR: "I always imagined a set to be busy and that there would be a director to yell "LIGHTS, CAMERA, annnnnd ACTION!" On the contrary, there were very few people on set and it was surprisingly VERY quiet as the hostesses had earbuds and direct communication to the production room.
There were actually no camera people. In fact, all the cameras were operated via joystick from a control room. The set was very much like a well-oiled machine!
Did I mention it was nerve wracking??!! LIVE TV is NO JOKE. I was so worried that I was going to accidently cuss!
KIM: "How would you describe Aubrey Aquino and Jessica Wills?"
CHAR: "Both hostesses are exceptionally poised and polished. Aubrey and Jessica are also incredibly warm. Their inviting dispositions made the interview process seamless and FUN!"
KIM: "How has being on "live" TV influenced your work style?"
CHAR: "Well, I certainly now wear my gloves in the garden more often! (HA HA HA! -Garden hands REALLY show on camera.)
"Live" TV is a serious job. As I was the last segment for both Live In the Bay! appearances, I got the chance to watch Jessica work with other guests. Consistent across the board, she has the exceptional ability to stay calm and relaxed and as a result, her guests are more relaxed in front of the camera.
With that being said, we're working towards creating a warm and calm experience for those visiting our Farm. Getting the chance to settle in means participants get more out of their experience and creative space."
KIM: "How did you react when you first learned about the opportunity to collaborate on CA BOUNTIFUL TV show?"
CHAR: "A feeling of utter sheer excitement. I needed a pinch in my side to believe that it was really happening!!
Since then, when we get emails from Aubrey asking us to collaborate and make short segments for her show, that feeling comes right back! Imagine us doing a crazy, happy dance and running circles around the dog!!"
KIM: "Do your kids think you're famous?"
CHAR: "I'm still their mom who bosses them around. Certainly no one famous in their eyes. There was a time when Twin #1 would come home and ask if I had gained anymore subscribers while she was off at school. :) Alas, no one has stopped me in the grocery market for my autograph, nor welcomed an already autographed photo."
KIM: "How has the partnership with Aubrey Aquino and California Bountiful impacted our local community?"
CHAR: "In all seriousness, being a regular contributor on California Bountiful has certainly brought new visitors to our flower farm. It's also been very lovely to get garden questions and a few "YAY! --Keep up the good work" kind of emails."
KIM: "How has collaborating with California Bountiful and KRON Live in the Bay! contributed to your professional development and business growth?"
CHAR: "The biggest change for has been starting our YouTube channel and sharing our flower growing knowledge. The floral farming aspect has been intense and being accountable to sharing it with others has certainly helped me stay on schedule and not feel like I have to take on everything.
I am so very grateful for the opportunities that we've been given and I'm hoping there will be more to come!" KIM: "You look like you're having a fun time in front of the camera! What are your biggest challenges?"
CHAR: "The limelight has been SO MUCH FUN!! I am one who likes to try and get things right on the first go. So having to take multiple takes can get laborsome! OH --I've come to learn that my most challenging task is coming up with outfits for all these segments! Definitely, NOT MY FORTÉ!)
